Pinewood Derby

Rules and Regulations

To avoid issues PLEASE read before starting to build car.

Parents we encourage you to help your son with the construction of the car BUT PLEASE do not build it for them !!

We will be holding a car building clinics on Wednesday. JAN.26TH from 6:00-7:30 p.m. for TIGERS & WOLFS and 7:30-9:00 p.m. for BEARS & WEBELOS at the church PLEASE plan to attend even if just to ask questions or get ideas! LAST CUTTING WILL BE 8:30

ALL CARS MUST PASS INSPECTION TO QUALIFY FOR THE RACE

The following are the inspection points…

ONLY the official BSA Pinewood Derby kit issued by Pack 99 in December 2021 is to be used and ONLY the parts that are included in that kit may be used when building the car !!!!!

Add-ons such as driver, steering wheel, windshield etc… may be used BUT must not exceed car dimensions outlined below !

Kits sold at Hobby Lobby, Lowes etc are NOT OFFICIAL BSA KITS and cannot be used by scouts for the Pack 99 Pinewood Derby!

1. The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces. The official race scale shall be considered final.

2. The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches (This includes after adding Spoilers, Tail Pipes, Fins etc…)! Height must not exceed 5 inches!

**The wheelbase may not be modified. It must be the same as the official kit. The distance from the center of the axles must be 4 7/16 inches. The axle slots may be moved but the distance between the front and rear axle must remain 4 7/16 inches.

3. The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 3\4 inches, this is including wheels.

4. The car must have 1 3\4 inch(the width of car block) clearance between the wheels (Front and rear) to fit on the track. This means Do NOT make your car skinnier (side to side)at the axle slots than the block of wood is that came in the box!

5. The car must have 3/8 inch clearance underneath the body when sitting flat on ALL 4 wheels.

6. The wood provided in the kit must be used. The block may be shaped any way that is desired, But MUST stay 1 continuous piece of wood and MUST stay 1 3\4 inches wide at the wheels.

7. The wheels supplied with the kit must be used. Any part of the wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded. You may remove the molding connection spot from the wheel surface if there is any. All 4 wheels at the same time must touch and sit flat on track and inspection block!

8. ONLY the axles supplied with the kit can be used. They may be polished or dry lubricated ONLY. NO SPEED AXLES OR AXLE RETAINERS !! If car is found to have “Illegal” Axles the car will be Disqualified!!!!

9. Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.

10. The car must not ride on any type of springs.

11. The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.

12. No loose material of any kind, such as lead shot, coins etc. may be used .
13. The car body may have no moving parts.

14. If, during a race, a car leaves the track without interfering with its opponent, it shall be considered to have ended its heat at that point.

15. If a car leaves its lane, at his sole discretion, the track chairman may inspect the track and, if a track fault is found which probably caused the initial violation; the track chairman may order the race to be rerun after the track is repaired.

16. If, during a race, no car reaches the finish line on the track, the car which went the farthest in its lane shall be declared as the heat winner.

17. If, during a race, a car leaves its lane and, in so doing, interferes with another racer, then the car at fault shall be declared to have lost the race heat and remaining cars MAY be rerun if decided!

18. Construction of ALL entries MUST have begun AFTER receiving the kit in December 2021 and only with the kits that have been provided by the Pack for the 2022 Race. (Cannot use a car built and raced from a previous year)!

19. Only one car may be registered by any participant in the Pinewood Derby.

20. Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered Teflon “white lube” will be allowed for lubricating the wheels. Lubricants must not foul the track and MUST be applied before Registering your Car!.

21. Once a car is Registered it can NOT be worked on in anyway unless the Race Chairman and or Committee deem it necessary due to an earlier wreck or malfunction.

22. Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete. The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these specifications.

23. The front of the car (nose) MUST remain at least 1\2 inch wide of solid wood (Do NOT shape the nose of the car to a Sharp point or a
V shape or angle it up from the bottom as this will not allow the car to sit evenly against the starting pin)!!

25. Any and All decisions made by the Track Chairman and or Race Committee are FINAL!!!

26. Do Your Best and HAVE FUN!!
